San Francisco Bay West Highland White Terrier Club

CLUB HISTORY

The San Francisco Bay West Highland White Terrier Club was founded in 1972 by people with a common interest in the West Highland White Terrier.  They had a desire to promote the outstanding characteristics of the breed, interchange information on the care, grooming and breeding of the Westie and to encourage sportsmanship and competition by holding and sponsoring matches and shows.

The SFBWHWTC began as the Bay Counties West Highland White Terrier Club with its first meeting held September 1972 at the home of Gail Krieger in Walnut Creek, CA.

The first officers were Bruce Campbell, President; Patricia Winans, First Vice-President and Gail Krieger, Secretary-Treasurer.

The current name, SFBWHWTC, was adopted in 1976 when sanctioning by the American Kennel Club (AKC) was obtained.
The Club held its first Specialty Show on September 9, 1978 and, in 1992, added Obedience Trials to the competition offered.

Each year the club sponsors a Specialty Show in April held in Sacramento, CA in conjunction with the Northern California Terrier Association.   During the summer, the club hosts the annual Fun Day for members only.

Throughout the year, the club has membership meetings with informative guest speakers giving presentations on pertinent canine topics.

The club also hosts two informal picnics, the Spring Fling and the Tartan Games held each year at Vasona Lake Park in Los Gatos, CA open to all members, subscribers and the public.

Additionally, we celebrate the accomplishments of our members and their talented Westies with Annual Awards at our festive Holiday Luncheon.

The club publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, the Highland Tartan, for members and subscribers throughout the US.

Westie Rescue, an important and necessary activity, has been supported by the Club over twenty years.  The club works closely with local Humane Societies and the SPCA as well as national rescue groups to rescue abandoned or surrendered Westies and find placement for them in new loving homes.  In many cases this requires significant veterinarian and foster care expenses, all supported by the Club.

The Club logo is a composite of several designs submitted by the membership who decided on a concept that was melded into one design.  We thank Dave Phillips for the color version of the club logo.
