Purchasing a puppy from a
reputable, responsible ethical breeder is the best decision you can make to find a healthy,
socialized and well-bred Westie. A reputable breeder will be an invaluable
resource to you for advice throughout the life of the dog.
- Reputable breeders are those who study the breed, usually are
active members
of local and/or national breed clubs, often exhibit in conformation at dog
shows and carefully plan and execute a breeding program.
Reputable
breeders adhere to a Code of Ethics and do not breed with the
intention of selling puppies. Instead, they breed with the
intention of improving their line in accordance with the breed
standard. They do not make their living by selling their
puppies.
Ethical
breeders are quite knowledgeable about the breed, perform pedigree
research and understand the genetic characteristics inherent in the
dam and sire's bloodlines. They also pay close attention to
breeding for the health of the breed and for the correct temperament of the breed.
They will discuss which medical tests and screenings they have done.
They
provide a clean environment and appropriate health care for the mother and
puppies. They ensure the puppies are well-socialized. They
keep the puppies for a minimum of 8 weeks. They will stand behind their puppies to the extent of taking
back the puppies (or grown dogs of any age) if there is a problem. They
will refund money or replace puppies with genetic defects.
Responsible, ethical,
reputable breeders are very careful to whom they sell their
puppies. Reputable breeders will
be interviewing you as you are interviewing them. They closely screen
all potential buyers and educate the new owners of the
puppies. They will provide references upon request.
Ask the
breeder about the pros and cons of the breed. They should speak
openly about the breed.
A reputable breeder will
normally welcome, if not require, you to visit the premises where the mother dog and puppies
reside. They will never claim that all of their puppies are
"show" quality. They never import puppies for sale
from other breeders.
A reputable breeder will insist that all non-show
or pet quality puppies are sold with a spay/neuter contract. All
puppies will be sold with registration and with a 3 to 5
generation pedigree chart.
A reputable Westie breeder participates in the rescue of
abandoned and owner-relinquished Westies.
Reputable and responsible
breeders do not sell their puppies in pet shops, in newspaper ads or
on the Internet.
The foremost concern of
the ethical, responsible and reputable breeder is the well-being of
the puppy, the breed and their breeding program.
Do
not let price alone be your criteria for selecting a puppy or a
breeder. Your family deserves a healthy, well-socialized puppy.
