Top Ten Tips for Success with Your Adopted Westie!
    Tip #3  --  Housetraining

Even the most perfectly housetrained dog may suddenly regress when faced with a new situation.  It might be minor or it might require almost complete retraining.  The success of your dog will depend on YOUR knowledge, patience and consistency.

    Housetraining Basics
The single most important aspect of housetraining is that you praise your dog each and every time he eliminates in the right place.  The more time YOU spend with your dog, the quicker and easier it will be to housetrain him.

The key to housetraining is to establish a routine that increases the chances that your dog will eliminate in the right place in your presence so that he can be praised and rewarded.  Until your dog is housetrained, he should not be allowed free run of your house.

If you find an accident in the house, just clean it up.  Do not punish your dog.  All this means is that you have given him unsupervised access to your house too soon -- YOU were the one who was negligent.

And, above all, NEVER EVER HIT YOUR WESTIE OR RUB HIS NOSE IN IT!!  All you have done is train the dog to be afraid of you.  If you have reached a point where you can see no other way to handle the housetraining issue except by hitting the dog, please call our rescue group immediately and return the dog.  You may need to find another type of pet!

    Nature's Miracle
We recommend the use of Nature's Miracle products for cleaning dog accidents.  This enzymatic stain remover and odor neutralizer is guaranteed to eliminate all stains & odors from pet accidents permanently or your money back!   It is safe for use around children and pets as it is non-toxic, non-flammable, non-caustic and non-acid. It eliminates urine odors completely with no perfume cover-up.  And it discourages pet re-soiling in the same area.

Dogs have a sense of smell that is at least one hundred times more sensitive than the human nose. That's why they often go back to the same spot, because they can smell the ammonia from the last time there was an "accident." Even though you think you've cleaned the area well, it is still necessary to treat the spot with an odor neutralizer. Nature's Miracle products break down the chemical nature of the ammonia, which in turn eliminates the smell of ammonia that triggers a pet to "mark" the spot again.

Do You Have Any Unaltered Dogs?
Do you have any dogs not neutered or not spayed in your house?  If so, and they are not  show dogs, please take them to your vet or to the SPCA and have them neutered or spayed immediately.  Other unaltered dogs in your home can create a lot of problems including interaction difficulties with your new Westie.  Their unaltered state may be causing your rescue to mark in the house.

There are many benefits to having your pets spayed or neutered.
  • Your pet will be a more content family member.

  • Your pet will be healthier as the risk of several forms of cancer will be reduced or eliminated.

  • You won't have to deal with staining and spraying.

  • Your pet's tendency to fight will be reduced.

  • You won't have to find homes for the offspring.

  • You won't have to spend the extra money.

  • You won't add to the fatal overpopulation problem.
